OUR FRENCH-CANADIAN ANCESTORS (Vol. 1) BY THOMAS J. LAFOREST
CHAPTER 11 The Gagnon Ancestors by Gabriel U. Gagnon Page 101

Four ancestors mark the Gagnons who came from France. More precisely, they came from the town of Tourouvre and Ventrouze in the tiny Province of Perche, just south of Normandy. Initially, the brothers Mathurin, Jean, and Pierre lived ona farm, in a little village called La Gagnonniere in the forest of Perche, between Tourouvre and Ventrouze. Their parents, Pierre Gagnon and Renee Roger, were tenants of their grandfather and grandmother, Barnabe and Francoise Crest, who had bought the farm from Gervais Roger and Marion Aubert on 28 December 1565. One should also note that they owned an inn on the same spot. Robert, the fourth Gagnon Ancestor, son of Jean Gagnon and of Marie Geffroy, came from Ventrouze.

ESTABLISHING THEMSELVES IN CANADA
In 1635, on finds the three brothers, Mathurin, Jean, and Pierre at Quebec where they opened a shop, sixty by twenty-four feet, on the Rue Saint-Pierre in the lower town. Their business partner was Mace Gravel who married Marguerite Tavernier, daughter of the sister of these first ancestors, on the 1st of May 1644 at Quebec. Later they sold this business to Pierre Pellerin on 9 October 1668.
Afterwards they went to Chateau-Richer to settle down. There is some question, according to Raymond Gariepy, that they might have owned a place at Saint Charles on Cape Tourmente from 1640 to 1646.
Robert Gagnon, the fourth ancestor, arrived in 1655, and settled on the piece of land on the Ile d'Orleans; the said land was conceded to him the following year.

MATHURIN GAGNON
Mathurin was born on 22 October 1606 at La Gagnonniere, two miles from Tourouvre where he was baptized. He lived there with his parents until he was twenty-nine years old.
While there, he became engaged to Vincente Gaulthier who had an "enfant naturelle" about 1636 names Marthe. Mathurin acknowledged his parentage and brought Marthe with him to Canada, where she married Jean Doyen in 1650.
He arrived in Canada about 1637 with his brothers. They opened a shop at Quebec: being the best educated and the only one who could write, Mathurin kept the accounts. We note that he made a buying trip back to France in 1643 for their business. Toward 1640 he settled at Chateau-Richer on a grant of land six and one half arpents in river frontage by 126 in depth. A survey in 1663 shows him located between the land of Michel Roullois and that of Pierre Gagnon, his brother. From 1646 to 1674, he bought and sold many pieces of land in Chateau-Richer. He even bought one on 16 January 1674, which he turned over to his son Mathurin the following October 13th.
on 30 September 1647, when he was middle aged, he married Francoise Goudeau, daughter of Francois and of Jeanne Jehan from Roche-Guyon in Normandy. Francoise's mother was married for a second time in France to Jacques Lehoux and they came to Canada together. Francoise was only thirteen years old when she married Mathurin while he was forty-one. The wedding took place in the home of Mathurin at Chateau-Richer, Jacques Lehoux signed as a witness to the marriage.
They had sixteen children, but only nine lived to marry: five boys and four girls. The following information is available for fourteen of these children:
1. The first child was an unnamed daughter born and baptized on 2 February 1649 at Quebec, but dead and buried four days later.
2. Marie-Madeleine was born on 26 June 1650 and baptized eight days later at Quebec. She married Jean Picard born on 13 November 1635 Normandy, Frances, son of Pierre and of Renee de Suronne on 18 November 1663 at Chateau-Richer. Aubert notarized the contract on 7 October. They had seven children, two boys and five girls. Jean was married previously to Marie Caron, daughter of Robert and of Marie Crevet, on 28 July 1656 at Quebec, with whom he had a daughter named Louise. Note: Marie Caron born about 1638 died 9 June 1660 and buried the next day. She met a tragic death, a victim of Huron renegades in quest of plunder on the Beaupre coast. Masquerading as Iroquois they carried off the young wife, her daughter Louise and three other children in her care. They were overtaken and surprised by the French and some Algonquins at Pointe Levis. Marie and one of her charges were killed in the skirmish that followed. Marie-Madeleine died and wasburied on 23 September 1680 at Quebec. Jean married for a third time to Marie-Anne Fortin born and baptized on 1 March 1666 at Chateau-Richer, daughter of Julien dit Bellefontaine and of Genevieve Gamache, in January 1683 at Beaupre. Aubert notarized the contract on 12 January. They had two children, a boy and a girl, before Jean died and was buried 29 November 1700 at Quebec. There were children still at home from his second marriage to Marie-Madeleine Gagnon. Marie Ann married a second time to Etienne Mirambeau, son of Salomon and of Elisabeth Villeger, on 7 January 1702 in Quebec. Chambalon notarized the contract eight days earlier. Marie Anne died before the year was up on 28 December 1702 without further children. Etienne also married a second time to Jeanne Levasseur on 22 April 1705 at Quebec. This couple had six children.
3. The third child was an unnamed son born on 18 August 1652 and died the same day.
4. Mathurin was born on 23 August 1653 and baptized on 7 September at Quebec. He married Charlotte Cauchon, daughter of Jean and of Madeleine Miville, on 28 October 1686 at Chateau-Richer. They had ten children, three boys and seven girls. Mathurin junior died between 9 October 1711 and 5November 1715 at Saint-Joachim.

Francoise died on 30 May 1680 and was buried the next day at Beauport. Louis married for a second time to Marguerite Carreau, daughter of Louis and of Jeanne Lerouge, on 17 February 1681 at Chateau-Richer. Marguerite was born on 24 June 1662 in Quebec and died on 15 October 1737 in Beauport. Louis and Marguerite had four children, all boys. Marguerite married a second time to Mathieu Tessier, son of Jacques and of Laurence Boigeon, on 25 November 1681 at Chateau-Richer. He was born about 1665 and died about 17 March 1744/45 in Beauport.
6. Vincent was born on 27 August 1658 and baptized on 15 September at Quebec. He married Anne David, daughter of Jacques and of Marie Grandry, on 12 October 1694 at Chateau-Richer. Jacob senior notarized the contract the previous day. Vincent died on 26 November 1708 and buried the next day at Chateau-Richer. Anne was born on 7 June 1672 and baptized on 12 June at Chateau-Richer. She died on 7 May 1711 and buried the next day at Chateau-Richer. They had eleven children, six boys and five girls.
7. Marie was baptized on 23 January 1662 at Chateau-Richer. She died the following month and was buried on 10 February 1662.
8. Marguerite was born on 9 May 1663 and baptized three days later at Chateau-Richer. She married Vital Caron, son of Michel and of Jeanne Allard, on 10 February 1686 at Chateau-Richer. The contract was notarized three days later by Jacob senior. Vital was 63 in the 1716 census of the lower Quebec City. Born about 1653 in France, he died 5 March 1730 and was buried the next day in Quebec. They had nine children, three boys and six girls.

Pierre died between 1718 and 1745 in Chateau-Richer. They had thirteen children, six boys and seven girls.
13. Joseph was born on 23 March 1674 and baptized the next day at Chateau-Richer. He died on 30 May 1676.
14. Joseph (2) was probably born early in 1675 since he was reported as seven years old in the census of 1681. He married Marie Cloutier, daughter of Charles and of Louise Morin and sister of Helene married to Pierre, on 26 January 1699 at Chateau-Richer. The contract was notarized two days earlier by Jacob senior. Joseph died on 11 December 1745 and was buried 2 days later. Marie was born on 9 March 1679 and baptized 13 March in Chateau-Richer. JEAN GAGNON
Jean was born on 13 August 1610 at the same place as Mathurin. on his arrival at Quebec at age 25, he too went into the family business.
In 1640 he obtained a concession of seven arpents in river frontage by 126 arpents deep, at Chateau-Richer. From 1640 to 1652, he too bought and sold land in Chateau-Richer, but he always kept that original grant received in 1640.
Jean married on 29 July 1640, at age thirty, to Marguerite Cauchon, age twenty, at Beaupre. She was the daughter of Jean and of Marguerite Cointal, originally from the town of Caux, in the Region of Dieppe in Normandy. Her mother died on 9 January 1633, then her father remarried on 4 April 1633 to Jeanne Abraham at Dieppe. Hence Marguerite, her brothers and sisters, came to Canada with their father and stepmother sometime after 1633.
Jean and Marguerite had eight children: six were married, two boys and four girls, while two died at an early age, as follows:
1. Jeanne was baptized on 15 August 1641 at Quebec. She married Jean Chapleau, son of Jean and of Francoise Brochar, on 26 April 1654 at Quebec. Aubert notarized the contract on 15 January. He was mentioned on 10 November 1689 at Hotel-Dieu, Quebec, and 60 years old in a contract on 17 November 1698 in Quebec and he was a citizen of La Canardiere of Quebec in 1692. 2. Renee was baptized on 8 April 1643 at Quebec. She married Jean Ouimet, son of Nicolas and of Perrette Nicayse, on 3 October 1660 at Chateau-Richer. Aubert notarized the contract the same day. However he was 31 at the 1666 census, 50 at the 1681 census at Ile d'Orleans. Thus he was born between 1631 and 1635 in Vrigny, Chalons-Marne, Marne, France.
3. Marguerite was baptized on 12 February 1645 at Quebec. She married Jean Caron, son of Robert and of Marie Crevet, on 16 November 1661 at Chateau-Richer. Aubert notarized the contract on 21 August. Jean was buried on 2 April 1670 at Chateau-Richer and as for Marguerite, no one is certain as to the date of her death or burial.

PIERRE GAGNON
Pierre was born on 14 February 1612 at La Gagnonniere and was baptized at Ventrouze, three miles from his birthplace. He was twenty-three years old when he came to Canada and went into business with his brothers.
Just like the other two, he obtained a concession at Chateau-Richer, between Mathurin, his brother, and Jean Cachon junior. His was a large grant of six and one half arpents on the river by 126 arpents deep. on 13 May 1657, Pierre cededa half arpents of his land to Nicolas Lebel, bordering that of Jean Cachon junior. He took it back on 29 December 1668.
When Pierre was thirty years old, he cast his lot with that of Vincente Desvarieux, daughter of Jean and of Marie Chevalier of Saint-Vincent of Aubermail, town of Caux, in Normandy. After their marriage on 14 September 1642 at Notre-Damede Quebec, they settled in Chateau-Richer, where they had ten children. Three boys were married, one son became a priest, one daughter entered a convent, and five other children died at an early age as follows:
1. Jean was baptized on 3 May 1643 at Quebec. He married Marguerite Racine, daughter of Etienne and of Marguerite Martin, on 6 November 1667 at Chateau-Richer. Aubert notarized the contract the same day. They had thirteen children, seven boys and six girls. Jean died 27 October 1699 and was buried the following day at Chateau-Richer. Marguerite was born on 8 March 1652 and baptized on 26 March 1652 at Quebec. She died on 17 December 1695 and was buried the next day atChateau-Richer.
2. Anne was baptized on 25 June 1643 at Quebec. She died before the census of 1666.
3. Pierre was born probably in 1646 since he was reported as twenty years old in the 1666 census, twenty-one in the 1667 census, and thirty-five in the 1681 census. He married Barbe Fortin, daughter ancestor Julien and of Genevieve Gamache, in 1669 at Chateau-Richer. Aubert notarized the contract on 6 February 1669. They had eleven children, six boys and five girls. Pierre died on 10 August 1687 and was buried the next day at Beaupre. Barbe married for a second time toPierre Lassard, son of Etienne and of Marguerite Sevestre, on 16 April 1690 at Beaupre. Pierre Lassard was born baptized on 4 August 1658 at Beaupre. He died on 7 May 1737 and buried the next day at L'Islet. Barbe was born on 21 October 1654 and baptized on 4 November 1654 at Quebec. She died and buried on 27 August 1737 at L'Islet.
4. Jeanne was baptized on 3 August 1648 at Quebec. She died a month later on 6 September 1648 and was buried the next day.
5. Pierre-Paul was baptized on 5 September 1649 at Quebec. Monseigneur de Laval ordained him a priest at Quebec in 1677. He was the first of his name and the third Canadian to become a priest. He died on 6 April 1711 at Beaupre.
6. Joseph was born on 27 December 1651 and baptized on 19 February 1652 at Quebec. He died at Chateau-Richer prior to the 1681 census.
7. Rene was born on 18 September 1653 and baptized the following day at Quebec. He died on 7 October 1653.
8. Marie-Madeleine was born on 10 February 1655 and was baptized two days later at Quebec. She died on 22 March 1677 at Hotel-Dieu in Quebec.
9. Raphael was born on 4 April 1658 and baptized on 22 July 1658 at Quebec. He died at Chateau-Richer sometime between the 1667 census and the 1681 census.
10. Noel was born on 9 February 1660 and baptized the next day at Quebec. He married Genevieve Fortin, daughter of ancestor Julien and of Genevieve Gamache and sister to Barbe married to Pierre, on 8 July 1683 at Beaupre. Duquet notarized the contract the previous day. They had ten children, four boys and seven girls. (Four and seven don't equal ten but rather eleven). Genevieve was born on 8 April 1662 and baptized the next day at Chateau-Richer. Genevieve died on 21 March 1703 and was buried the next day at Chateau-Richer. Noel married for a second time to Barbe Cloutier, daughter of Zacharie and of Madeleine Esmard, on 12 January 1705 at Chateau-Richer. Barbel notarized the contract four days earlier. Barbe Cloutier was the widow of Charles Belanger with whom she had nine children. She and Noel were without children together. Barbe was baptized on 11 January 1650 at Beaupre. She died on 24 April 1711 and buried two days later at Chateau-Richer. Charles Belanger was baptized on 19 August 1640, son of Francois and of Marie Guyon, at Quebec. He died on 14 December 1692 and was buried the next day at Chateau-Richer. Noel died on 25 November 1708 and was buried the next day at Chateau-Richer.
It was Marie-Madeleine who entered the Convent of the Augustine's at the age of thirteen years. The sisters of the Hospital of Quebec, at her death, which happened in 1677 when she was only twenty-two, wrote this about her:
* "Veritably, she was comparable to the angels in her obedience, her spirit of gentleness and peace, and for her devotion..."
The burial of Vincente took place on 2 January 1695 and that of Pierre on 17 April 1699 at Chateau-Richer.

MARGUERITE GAGNON
Before finishing this, I have to tell you that Marguerite Gagnon, born on 5 October 1598 at La Gagnonniere, sister of the three Gagnon brothers, also came to Canada. Marguerite was married to Eloi Tavernier, son Thomas and of Julienne Jouy on 3 February 1624 at Ventrouze in France. After their marriage, they lived at Saint-Malo de Randonnai, from where Eloi came. Note Eloi was mentioned in Quebec City on the 1st of May 1644. They had a least two girls:
1. Marguerite was born in 1627 at Saint-Malo, France. She married Joseph-Mace Gravel, son of Joseph and of Marguerite Masse, on 1 January 1644 at Quebec in the chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Anges. Joseph-Mace born on 28 April 1616 in Seez, Normandy, France. He died on 26 April 1686 and buried two days later at Chateau-Richer. Mace was in business with the three brothers. Was it he who would go with Mathurin on his business trip to France in 1643? Marguerite died on 12 January 1660 and was buried the next day at Chateau-Richer. Note Marguerite was 39 at the 1666 census in Beaupre, 54 at the 1681 census, 70 in 1697.
2. Marie was born on 27 May 1631, also at Saint-Malo, France. She married Gilles Bacon, son of Etienne and of Madeleine Feron, on 2 May 1647 at Quebec. Gilles was born between 1622 & 1625 at Saint-Gilles de Caen, Calvados, France. Gilles died on 5 March 1654 in Quebec. They had two children, a boy and a girl. After the death of Gilles, Marie turned her attention to the church and took her vows as a nun on 19 October 1669. She died on 2 February 1700 at Hotel-Dieu of Quebec.

In 1642, they sold their belongings in Saint-Malo and on the first of May 1644, they were in Quebec where their daughter Marguerite married Mace Gravel.

THE MOTHER OF MARGUERITE AND THE THREE BROTHERS
One also finds at Chateau-Richer, that the mother Renee Roger witnessing the marriage contract in 1647 of Mathurin. And some years later, it was no longer a question of her being here but the question was "Would she return to France?" Pierre, her husband, had already died in France, between the dates of 16 December 1630, when he signed for the death of his brother Olivier, and 1633 where, in a notarial act, Renee Roger was called the widow of Pierre Gagnon. She died sometime between 10 November 1633 and 29 July 1640 at Beaupre.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME
In the various documents in France, at Tourouvre or at Ventrouze, one finds the following variations: Gangnon, Gaignon, Gaingnon, and Gasgnon. According to Dauzet, the sense of the name Gagnon could represent the mythical horned boar of Provence, or more likely in Normandy, a barnyard dog, nicknamed for a fierce man. The Gagnon family is one of the most numerous in French America. All of the Gagnons whom I know are excellent people! It is Gagnon who tells you this!
In addition to the alternate surnames of Belzile and Belisle, some of the Gagnon descendants have taken the name Le Sauvage. Other family name variations include: Couange, Gagne, Gagner, Gagnier, Gangeon, Gannion, Ganon, Garneau, Gonio, Gonyaw, Gonyo, Gonyon, Gugnon and Jagnon.

FAMILIES OF GAGNON (GAIGNON) RESEARCHED BY GILBERT GAGNON
THE GAGNON FAMILY
Gilbert Gagnon writes the following:
JE ME SOUVIENS! (I SHALL REMEMBER!)
We should consider ourselves fortunate that we are able to benefit from the research of Madame Pierre Montagne in France, subsequently the publication of her articles by the French and Acadian Genealogical Review (Vol. 1 No. 4). For it was through her efforts that we are able to get a better insight into the Gagnon Family history.
In the province of Perche, France in the town or parish of Tourouvre, there is situated a small village called La Gagnonniere. In this village lived Barnabe Gagnon, a farmer (ploughman) and Francoise Crests, his wife, with their two surviving children - Olivier and Pierre. Olivier, the elder was born about 1557 and was married before 1581 to Antionette Febvrier, daughter of Jehan Febvrier. Olivier Gaignon was believed to have died November 1630. His estate was settled December 30, 1630 with his three Children, Olivier, Francoise and Jeanne. Barnabe Gaignon and Francoise Creste died before October 28, 1581. Their estate was divided between Olivier and Pierre.
Pierre Gaignon Sr., our direct descendant, was a minor in 1581 and was probably born between 1569 & 1571. No records were found as to his actual date of birth. Now, Pierre might have been married twice. Marguerite, the eldest of the children, was born October 5, 1598 and said to be the daughter of Pierre Gaignon Sr. and Francoise Roger, while the other children's mother is said to be Madeleine Renee Roger. In any case Pierre Gaignon, Sr., married before 1598. His children were: Marguerite, October 5, 1598; Noel, August 31, 1601; Louys, January 15, 1604; Mathurin, October 22, 1606; Jean, August 13, 1610; and Pierre, Jr., February 14, 1612. (Noel and Louys are not referred to again. Further study is needed.)
Pierre Gaignon, Sr. moved around considerable in his lifetime. Through documents and land sales it is stated that he lived in La Gagnonniere, La Boullee, La Grouettiere, in the parish of Lhome, and La Ventrouze. Pierre, Jr. was born at La Ventrouze and his sister Marguerite was married February 3, 1624 to Eloi LeTavernier of the parish of Sainte Malo de Randonnai (son of Thomas LeTavernier and Julienne Jouy) at Sainte Marie Madeleine De La Ventrouze. Pierre is said to have died between 1630 & 1633 where a document in 1633 says that his wife, Madeleine Renee Roger Gaignon, was a widow.
In 1635, when Robert Gifford and Noel Juchereau departed to New France, the three Gaignon brothers, Mathurin, Jean and Pierre, were aboard the ship, followed shortly by their sister, Marguerite, and her husband, Eloi LeTravernie and her two daughters, Marie and Marguerite. Around 1642, Mathurin on one of his trips to France, returned with his mother, Madeleine Renee Roger Gaignon.
It has been said that the three Gaignon brothers were inseparable. They were always together buying, constructing and selling. Nothing was decided without each other. on their arrival to New France, they built themselves a house in "laBassee-Ville' in Quebec City. After living there a few years they donated some to the land, which now is Our Lady of Victories Church in Quebec. Upon donating the land, the three brothers, moved to Chateau-Richer next to Beaupre. (Chateau-Richer became a parish a few years later.) There, Jean was the first to marry. on July 29, 1640, Jean married Marguerite Cochran. Two years later, on September 14, 1642, Pierre married Marguerite Desvarieux. Mathurin, the eldest of the three brothers, at the age of 41, married Francoise Boudeau (30) in 1647. Even though they were all married they still were inseparable. Their farms were next to each other. Of the three brothers, Mathurin was the most enterprising. He had a viable trading business in Quebec City and went to France on business many times. He was considered the first, most effective and resourceful merchant from the parish of Chateau-Richer.
The Gaignon brothers left quite a legacy. Even though Mathurin was the last to be married, his family consisted of 15 children. Pierre's family, our direct descendants, consisted of 10 children and Jean's family was 8 children. Between them they had a total of 33 children.
Jean was the first to die at the age of 60 on April 2, 1670. Mathurin at the age of 84 died on April 22, 1690, and Pierre, Jr. died at the age of 87 on April 17, 1699. (All at Chateau-Richer)
We are their legacy. Throughout Canada and the United States, the Gagnon families have flourished and we should not forget their struggles to pioneer the "new land". In the French saying, "Je me sauviens." (I shall remember.)
