Dear all,

For a friend I do research on George Goodchild who was a British soldier and stayed in Belgium after WW1.

When the Germans came in Belgium in 1940, he returned in England.

Is there somebody who could provide information.

Thank you .

Merci.

Claire

Hi Claire,

There are so many possible George Goodchilds that it is impossible to determine the correct one without more information. Do you know anything more like his birth and (possible) marriage details?

From 1928-1933 and in 1939, George lived in Brussels. Maybe Brussels kept a civil registration (“registre de la population”) that contains George’s birth details and possible family?

How do you know that he was British and a WW1 veteran? Most of the internet sites mention “American” .. Of course he could be British born, but maybe he emigrated to America after 1939 ... !

Hi Sylvia,

Thank you for the reply.

I have few details as it is a friend who told me that because she has a painting of George Goodchild from her family. She said he was a British soldier, maybe because he returned to Britain, but I did research and he could be Australian or American as you write.

She tries to find other information. For the moment I haven(t news. I shall phone her to know if the family was living in Brussels.

Thanks again.

Kind regards,

Claire

Hi Claire (I can read French, so please feel free to answer in French)

I had a look at the many George Goodchilds and the following person could be a possibilty (of course I could be totally wrong!):

George Goodchild b 1877 Langham, Suffolk (? possible birth registration: 2nd Quarter 1877, District Stow, Suffolk... there is another George who was registered in the first quarter of 1877, but this was in district Hoxne, Suffolk)
Father: Harry/Henry b abt 1851 St Burslem, Staffordshire, d 1924?
Mother: Anne (maiden name: Pryke?) b abt 1840 Wickhambrook, Suffolk, d 1931?
Marriage: 2-2-1911 St Lukes Church, Chelsea
Wife: Johanna Sophie Hohlfeld b abt 1884 Switzerland, d 3-12-1918 Surrey (father: Albert August Wilhelm Max Hohlfeld)
-
Military information (I assume that these are both for this George):
1915 - Army Service Corps, reg#: M2/267727, Battalion: Midland Field Ambulance
1919 - Royal Army Service Corps, reg#: T/307762, Battalion: London Mechanical Transport Repair Depot

Some of my thoughts:
1 - The death of his wife (1918) might have been one of the reasons why George left England.
2 - This George was working as a servant for the higher classes in 1891/1901/1911. For example, in 1911 he was working for Sir Edward Albert Sassoon in Sandgate, Kent. This is less than 30km from Hothfield, the home of Sir Henry James Tufton ( http://artuk.org/discover/artists/goodchild-george ). Did George meet Tufton while working for Edward Sassoon? Or, maybe George had worked as a servant for Tufton too? (He might not have become a full-time painter until he was middle-aged!)

I visited La Hulpe a long time ago and know that it is just outside of Brussels. However, I don’t think that George only lived there as I had found the following addresses:

1930/31: “Goodchild G., artiste-peintre, pl. Ste-Gudule 6-7
1932/33: “Goodchild G., artiste-peintre, r. Royale 41 - 15.03.95
1939: “Goodchild G., rue de la Ruche 46
